This mesmerizing display invites you to explore the Garden transformed by stunning geometric light installations that illuminate the beauty of the desert landscape in a new way. As the sun sets, LIGHT BLOOM comes to life, casting intricate shadows and vibrant hues across the Garden. Wander the trails and let the enchanting installations transport you to a magical realm where the natural world meets the abstract.


About the Artists:


Yelena Filipchuk (b. 1987) Born in Lviv, Ukraine, Yelena attended UC Berkeley and studied Conservation and Resource Studies, concentrating on patterns in the natural world, biomimicry and environmental justice. Then trained in studio art and fabrication and digital design. She thrives in the creative process, creating thought provoking artwork that investigates patterns and forms as a way to educate and inspire.


Serge Beaulieu (b. 1981) Born in Revelstoke BC, Canada, Serge attended Carleton University and studied Industrial Design. After having practiced as a designer for 10 years, Serge returned to his roots as an artist and sculptor by creating large scale artworks that push the boundaries of technology, geometry and fabrication. He is constantly investigating materials, light and processes in order to harness technology as a conduit for artistic expression.

The S’edav Va’aki Museum is thrilled to invite you to visit our latest exhibit, “Following Their Roots – Traditional Native American Farming in Arizona, Past and Present,” opening October 17, 2024. This exhibit is all about exploring and celebrating the deep connections between Arizona’s Indigenous communities and their agricultural traditions, offering a rich historical perspective and a glimpse into the contemporary practices that sustain these cultural lifeways today.


Come discover how these communities have thrived for over 4,000 years, learn about farming practices unique to Arizona's diverse ecosystems, and dive into the important ongoing story of water rights in the Southwest. It is a fascinating journey through history, food, and culture that you won’t want to miss!


The exhibit will be open until Summer 2025, so there is plenty of time to check it out. We can’t wait to see you there!

Meryl McMaster: Bloodline is a survey exhibition featuring the pioneering large-scale photographic works of Canadian artist Meryl McMaster (b. 1988), reflecting her mixed nêhiyaw(Plains Cree)/Siksika, Dutch, and British ancestry. This exhibition spans McMaster’s past accomplishments (2008-2019) and her recent explorations (2022-2023) of family histories, particularly those of her Plains Cree/Métis female forebears from the Red Pheasant Cree Nation in present-day Saskatchewan, Canada. This will be the first major solo exhibition of Meryl McMaster’s work outside of Canada. McMaster interrogates colonial histories, residential schools, and ancestral trauma, re-creating and re-imagining oral histories and stories in reclamation.

What role does community play in contemporary mothering experiences? How might we tackle taboo topics such as postpartum anxiety, rage, and birth trauma, while celebrating maternal joy, love, sacredness and the spectrum of emotions in between? What can we do to acknowledge the invisible labor of mothering, recognizing it is not a monolithic experience, and offering a rich tapestry of alternative, inclusive narratives? 


“Notes on Motherhood” explores various stages of matrescence, or “mother-becoming” –– from birth and caregiving to grief and loss. The exhibition challenges the narrow depictions of mothers and mothering within art history and visual culture. Drawing from the museum’s dynamic collection, the presentation assesses the presence and absence of nuanced, complex portrayals of motherhood. Often, maternity is viewed through a male gaze, with the image of the Madonna and Child dominating the experience. Alongside selections from the collection, the exhibition inserts voices and perspectives traditionally left out. Regional women-identified artists, such as Megan Driving Hawk (United States, b. 1988), Gabriela Muñoz (United States, b. Mexico 1980) and Ashley Czajkowski (United States, b. 1986), each offer a unique perspective on mothering, thereby expanding upon the limited understandings of birth, nurturing and unseen domestic labor.

Notes on Motherhood at ASU Art Museum

“Muddy Terrains” presents a diverse collection of newly created works from two artists’ residencies with CALA Alliance in the Spring and Summer of 2024. San Juan-based Mariana Ramos Ortiz (Puerto Rico, b. 1997) and Phoenix-based Estephania González (United States, b. 1989) explore the interconnected themes of environmentalism, self-determination and impermanence in the Southwest and the Caribbean Archipelago. The exhibition underscores some of the most critical themes pertinent to the region, including resource scarcity. In their dynamic practice that employs innovative printmaking techniques, Ramos Ortiz explores the qualities of the earth as they relate to the realities of occupation, protection and temporality. Drawing inspiration from the societal and spiritual perspectives of the Mexica peoples of pre-conquest Mexico and Latinx hair practices, González’s work underscores the cultural significance of water across space, time and geographies.

“Muddy Terrains: Mariana Ramos Ortiz + Estephania González” is organized by ASUAM Senior Curator Alana Hernandez, with ASUAM Windgate Curatorial Fellow Sade Moore and made possible by generous funding from the Ford Foundation. The exhibition is presented in collaboration with a Community of Practice composed of Vania Guevara, Advocacy and Political Director, CHISPA AZ; Pita Juarez, Filmmaker, and Media and Communications Creative; and Elizabeth Pineda, Photographer and Faculty Associate at Arizona State University.

“Chicano/a/x Prints and Graphics: Selections from the Hispanic Research Center’s Collection, 1980–2010” showcases a partnership between ASU’s Hispanic Research Center (HRC) and ASU Art Museum and brings together works from the 1980s into the 2010s drawn from the HRC’s dynamic collection. Featuring over 30 artists who each offer a kaleidoscope of perspectives on the Mexican American experience, this year-long exhibition pays homage to the ideals of the Chicano Movement of the 1960s and 70s and expands upon them through the widely disseminated medium of prints. Presented in two parts, this unique exhibition underscores how Chicano/a/x artists have employed prints and graphics to build community, engage with social concerns, and interrogate shifting notions of political and cultural identity over time.

“Chicano/a/x Prints and Graphics: Selections from the Hispanic Research Center’s Collection, 1980–2010” is organized by ASUAM Senior Curator Alana Hernandez and ASUAM Curator Brittany Corrales and is made possible by funding provided by the Evelyn Smith Exhibition Fund. Additional funding is provided by ASU’s Hispanic Research Center and The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. The exhibition is presented in collaboration with a Community of Practice composed of Carla Chavarria, Community Building Director, Iconico, and Carla León Celaya, PhD candidate in the Spanish Department at the School of International Letters and Cultures, ASU.
